Principal Evaluation - Executive Summary

July 2011

Dear Fellow Principals,

It’s no cliché when you hear “Times are tough in education”!  We know all too well of the budget challenges in our state and nation especially since 2008.  The budget cuts to South Dakota schools hit hard during the last legislative session and many schools have had to restructure and revamp budgets, staffing, and spending in order to protect our most precious commodity – our students.

Although schools in South Dakota have had to face excruciating budget cuts, we cannot give up belonging to the organizations that advocate for our students, appropriate funding, and policy.  You may work in a school that has determined that it cannot pay for principals and other administrators to belong to their professional organizations.  Some schools may be cutting membership opportunities partially or completely.  Unfortunately, these “savings” may actually cost schools more.

Without these memberships, we lessen the power of the organizations that depend on membership to advocate for education.  The opportunities for administrators to network with each other are significantly reduced.  The professional development organizations offer is missed as well.

Your membership in School Administrators of South Dakota (SASD), the South Dakota Association of Elementary School  Principals (SDAESP), and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) needs your membership!  If these organizations lose membership, they lose the power to do the work they are set out to do.  Do not let your membership lapse!  If you are not a member, become one today!  If your school will not pay for all of these memberships, consider joining anyway.

There are too many critical issues facing education today to not have powerful professional organizations advocating on behalf of the interests of our unique schools!  We need this advocacy at the state and national level.

If you have not yet done so, renew your membership with SASD, SDAESP, and NAESP today!  Do it for your personal professionalism and for the students who fill your schools!  You can find the membership registration at http://www.sasd.org/.

Sincerely,

Dr. Julie Hartmann

State Representative for SDAESP
